"How you experience the world is different then how i experience the world and both our interpretations matter" - Manu Meyer
I study the seascape,
the area where humans interact with the ocean
Seascapes are important here in Hawaiʻi because the ocean (1) is a large part of our identity, (2) is an area of high overlap between many user groups, tourists, residents, and kanaka, (3) is threatened as our climate continues to change and human pressures increase and (4) represents our connection to our kūpuna and our link to the world.

Through my research I hope to:
Our people, and many that come to Hawaii have a love for the ocean. I believe this pilina we have for the ocean is the only thing that can save it and make sure our ocean can survive and flourish. This is my ocean. It is not just the beautiful ocean creatures, but the interaction that we have as humans with the kai.
Ke au nui ke au iki - Current research questions
- highlight the diversity of ocean knowledge in different users and communities
- promote an ocean culture and identity
- reconnect and promote Hawaii’s Ancestral Knowledge

- Nearshore ocean currents are difficult to map using modern oceanographic techniques. How can we use local knowledge to inform ourselves about baselines and changes in our ocean environments.
- What do we know about ocean current names and characteristics? Help us re-define the ocean places our seafaring ancestors traveled. Discover the ancient paths and stories.
